*MÉRIAN (Matthaüs) - CHOVIN (Jacques-Antony). - Lot 83
*MÉRIAN (Matthaüs) - CHOVIN (Jacques-Antony). The Dance of the Dead, as depicted in the commendable and famous city of Basle, to serve as a mirror of human nature. Basel : Jean Rodolphe Im Hoff, 1744. - In-4, 203 x 165 : (1 f.), pp. (V)-XXXII, (1 f.), pp. (XXXIII)-LIX, 132 pp. Jansenist black chagrin, spine ribbed, gilt border inside, gilt edges (19th century binding). Langlois, II, pp. 179-180. First bilingual French-German edition of the Dance of the Dead of Basel by Matthaüs Merian (1593-1650 ). This dance appeared for the first time in 1621 and was reprinted many times, notably in 1625, 1649, 1696, 1698, etc. This one is important in the history of the editions of this work. It was published by the Swiss engraver Jacques-Antony Chovin (1720-1776). It includes two title pages, one printed in French, the other in German entirely engraved on copperplate and illustrated with the compositions that Merian made for the 1649 edition. The illustration of the Dance of the Dead includes 42 engravings in the text, to which is added a figure of a man's head which, if turned over, represents a skull. Chovin bases his work on the macabre engravings that Matthaüs Merian made for the 1649 edition. But whereas Merian had worked in wood, Chovin chose copperplate engraving. On this occasion, he took the initiative to add landscapes to some engravings, notably those of the Abbess, the Mayor and the Jew, to remove or add certain attributes and to rework certain skeletons. Chovin's engravings can thus be considered as being in first printing. They were reused until 1830. good copy in a 19th century binding . It bears the bookplate of Marc Bertrand François de Lassus (1745-1794), baron of Labarthe and Nestier, councillor at the parliament of Toulouse, victim of the Terror. This bookplate has been brought back since the binding is later than the death of the baron; it covers another bookplate. Some minor wear and tear and light marks on the boards. Several leaves browned as usual, scattered foxing and wetness in the lower margin of the first and last leaves. The title in French, corresponding to folio A1, to be placed at the head, has been bound before the preface to the reader, between pages XXXII and XXXIII. Provenance : Marc Bertrand François de Lassus, with ex-libris. - ex-libris stamp on the top of the title (name difficult to decipher) - Bourlon de Rouvre, with ex-libris.
