*LOTI (Pierre). In Morocco. Paris : Calmann-Lévy, 1890. - In-18, 181 x 115 : (3 ff.), IV, 358 pp. printed cover. Jansenist peacock blue morocco, spine ribbed, framed in the same morocco inside, decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, white parchment lining decorated with gilt Arabic script, blue moiré silk endpapers, the first one decorated with 6 crescents and a central motif, painted in silver, double guards, gilt head, untrimmed, cover preserved, slipcase (Noulhac) First edition in bookshops of this account of a trip to Morocco, from Oran to Fez, while Pierre Loti was accompanying a diplomatic mission in this country. UNIQUE COPY, ENRICHED WITH 72 SUPERB ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS BY CHARLES JOUAS (1866-1942). These compositions are distributed on the title, at the head of the chapter and in the cul-de-lampe. They are of a remarkable execution and a great finesse, sometimes enhanced with white. Charles Jouas realized in 1896 a book of watercolors which were precisely intended to illustrate Loti's Au Maroc. This copy was certainly made at the same time. A very nice copy bound by Noulhac, perfectly preserved, coming from the collection of the pharmacist and bibliophile Ange François Mariani, known as Angelo Mariani (1838-1914), inventor of the Mariani wine with Peruvian coca. Slight sunstroke affecting the nerves, not serious. Provenance: Angelo Mariani, with bookplate.
