St. Petersburg: expedition for the preparation of state papers, 1904. - Album large folio, 471 x 374 : (10 ff.), 21 photogravures, 174 phototypes. Brown half-chagrin with corners, spine decorated, spotted head, untrimmed (period binding). Extremely rare album of photographs of the participants of the costume ball organized by Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918) and Alexandra Feodorovna (1872-1918) at the Winter Palace of St. Petersburg on February 13, 1903. this eminently grandiose and sumptuous event remains the most famous celebration given in St. Petersburg during the reign of Nicholas II . It marked the end of an era and was the last great ball in the history of the Russian Empire. According to its contemporaries, it was not only a great spectacle but also a complete work of art. All the nobility of the Russian Empire was present and the participants had to be dressed in Russian costumes of the 17th century inspired by the time of the second tsar of the Romanov dynasty, Aleksej Mihajlovič (1629-1676). These costumes were created by artists and decorators Aleksandr Âkovlevič Golovin (1863-1930), Ivan Aleksandrovič Vsevoložskij (1835-1909) and Serge Salomko, assisted by the best tailors of the time such as designer Nadežda Petrovna Lamanova (1861-1941). At the request of the Russian Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, the best photographers of St. Petersburg were asked to take pictures of the participants in the costume show. The photographs were used to make this album published in 1904 by the State Printing House. The copies were offered to the people present at this event or sold for charity. Only a few hundred copies were printed, and only very few complete copies remain on the market today. The persons photographed having withdrawn their photograph to preserve them in the family and to transmit them to the following generations. ONE OF THE VERY RARE COMPLETE COPIES KNOWN IN PRIVATE HANDS. This copy bound at the time is indeed absolutely complete. It consists of a title in Russian and French printed in red and black, followed by 9 leaves giving the description of the photographs on two columns, in French and in Russian, and 195 plates with captions also in both languages, including 21 photogravures representing the members of the imperial family and 174 phototypes of other personalities who took part in the event. All of them represent the participants in costume. On these 195 plates 190 are individual portraits and 5 are group photographs (National dance performed during the ball - Group of officers of the regiment of the Guard - Group of officers of the regiment of the Knights-Guards - Group of officers of the Horse Guard - Group of officers of the regiment of the Hussars of the Guard). A very well preserved copy, entirely mounted on tabs. We note only some rubbing of the hinges and the covers and the corners slightly dulled.
