[BUÑUEL (Luis) - DALI (Salvador)]. - Lot 164
[BUÑUEL (Luis) - DALI (Salvador)]. Set of brochures on the film The Golden Age. The Golden Age is a film directed by Luis Buñuel in 1930 on a script co-written with Salvador Dalí. An avant-garde and surrealist film par excellence, it was commissioned by Charles de Noailles, whose wife, Marie-Laure de Noailles, of Jewish descent, was one of the most important fortunes in France. The first screening took place in July 1930 in the de Noailles' mansion, then on October 22 at the Panthéon Rive gauche and finally twice on November 28 and December 3, 1930 at the Studio 28 cinema in Montmartre. It was during this screening on December 3 that the theater was ransacked by extreme right-wing militants shouting "Let's see if there are still Christians in France!"They threw ink on the screen, threw smoke bombs and stink bombs, and forced the audience to leave. The film was immediately censored for its anti-patriotic and above all anti-Christian content and was seized on December 12. This collection offers some testimonies of these events. It includes: - The original "Revue-programme" of the film for the sessions at Studio 28 in 1930, in-8, 220 x 135, stapled. This program is divided into 2 parts head to tail. The most important part, of 38 pages, is dedicated to Buñuel's film. It begins with a small text of Dali: "My general idea in writing with Bunuel the scenario of the Golden Age was to present the straight and pure line of "conduct" of a being who pursues love through the ignoble humanitarian, patriotic ideals and other miserable mechanisms of the reality". Following are the script, subtitles, dialogue, a long text on the film ending with the one entitled Social Aspect - subversive elements signed by the main members of the surrealist current at the time, the "Catalogue of works exhibited at Studio 28 for the first performance", a catalog of surrealist books on sale at the Corti bookstore, and 30 black photographs of the film. These texts are illustrated with compositions by Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Jean Arp, Yves Tanguy, Man Ray and Joan Miro, reproduced in black in the text. Copy complete of the errata page. Tears and folds to the cover. - Double leaflet in-4, 249 x 202, proposing the text of the scenario and the text Social aspect - subversive elements, taken from the program. - The Affair of "L'Age d'or", brochure in-4, 271 x 187 : 2 ff., one plate of photographs. Brochure published in January 1931 giving the statement of the facts, extracts of press articles, extracts of the program and a questionnaire. This leaflet is signed (printed signature) by Maxime Alexandre, Aragon, André Breton, René Char, René Crevel, Salvador Dali, Paul Éluard, Georges Malkine, Benjamin Péret, Man Ray, Georges Sadoul, Yves Tanguy, André Thirion, Tristan Tzara, Pierre Unik and Albert Valentin. At the end of the questionnaire is this Nota Bene: "People who, by chance, would be tempted to answer this questionnaire are asked to write to André Breton, 42, rue Fontaine - Paris IXe. We find a leaflet proposing photographs of the ransacked cinema, of a work of Dali degraded as well as photographs of the film. - A note on the affair of the surrealist film The Golden Age. Brochure in-4, 255 x 203 : (2 ff.). Tract giving the facts of the affair and a selection of articles, composed and translated into English by Y. Cloud.
