Paul Ange Nocquet (1877-1906) - Lot 189
Paul Ange Nocquet (1877-1906) Bacchus Plaster with an imitation bronze patina Signed "NOCQUET" on the rock H : 39,2 cm Related literature : Catalogue of the memorial exhibition of the works of Paul Nocquet, New York, American Art Association, April 28-May 6 1906. Clutching a vine with his right hand and holding a bunch of grapes to his mouth, this Bacchus, unbalanced by drunkenness, is a reinterpretation of the ancient drunken Silenus and is part of the body of sculptures inspired by the mythology admired by Paul-Ange Nocquet. Originally from Belgium, the artist trained in sculpture with Jef Lambeaux. He obtained the Prix Godecharle in 1900 and exchanged his boarding school in Rome for a stay in Paris where he frequented the studios of Antoine Mercié and Jean-Léon Gérôme and met Auguste Rodin. In 1903, the artist moved to New York. In 1906, the American Art Association in New York paid tribute to the sculptor who died during a balloon trip. During this retrospective exhibition, a bronze Bacchus, already exhibited in Paris, was presented alongside, among others, a Hercules and Antaeus, a Caryatid and a figure of Thor.
