It was taken between December 31, 1942 and January 2, 1943 on the beach at Buna, New Guinea. Its publication was the subject of an intense debate between the editorial staff of Life magazine and the official censorship service. It was a question of knowing if the duty to inform was superior to the potentially negative consequences that its diffusion would cause. In particular, that of exposing the realities of a war that was only intended to be victorious. This image was later featured on the cover of Yank magazine.
