Containing the 8 lessons of M. de Launay's Method, for learning to read French & Latin, by a method so easy & so natural, that one makes more progress in three months, than in three years, by the old & ordinary Method, etc. Fourth edition. Revised, corrected, improved & increased in many ways by the author, & mainly with a preface, which demonstrates the advantages of the new Method, which proves the defects of the old one, & which gives the way to teach children: with other very useful parts, etc. La Veuve Robinot, Quai des Grands Augustins, near the Church. Chaubert, Quai des Augustins, near the S. bridge. Michel, at the Renommée & Prucence. Debats, at the 7th Pillar of the Grand'Salle du Palais in S. François. XII, 168 pp. full marbled calf, spine decorated with five nerves, red morocco title-piece, red edges (Binding of the period). First edition, despite the mention of "fourth" on the title page. From the method of Pierre Pipoulain-Delanay, or Py-Poulain (1670-Century 1730), the author's father, and printed in small numbers in 1719. Pipoulain-Delaunay fils (died in 1767) had the work reprinted in 1741, adding to it observations already written by his father and extracts from grammarians. He published in 1745, the Anti-Quadrille. And, in 1750, writes the present volume with fragments of the work of 1719, notably the Alphabet, adding reflections and the results of his personal experience. Chapter provided on the Idea of the Universe proportionate to the reach of children with Creation of the World, Stones and Metals, Plants and Trees [two handwritten errata p. 85 which could be by the author's hand], Animals, Members of the Human Body, The Human Mind and the Arts, etc. The same text is then taken up in Latin. In the Principes de la méthode, Launay criticizes, on twenty-two pages, the Bureau typographique de Dumas, which would only be the work of his father and attaches the letter written to the Mercure de France by the Abbé de la Serre, in his defense. A very fine and rare copy, perfectly preserved, small spotting at the foot of the boards.
