MORIN (Louis). - Lot 93
MORIN (Louis). Carnavals Parisiens. Paris: Montgredien et Cie, Librairie illustrée, [1898]. - In-12, Bradel-style red half-maroquin with corners, ribbed spine decorated with gilded carnival figures, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (E. Carayon). First edition of this pleasant work, intended to add a touch of whimsy to the prevailing ennui of the time: "This ennui that is taking hold of us, because of the sadness, ugliness and hypocrisy that surround us, must be shared by many people: let them clamor with us for a little color and a little whimsy" (page 181). In this way, Morin extols the virtues of Parisian and Montmartre parties in particular, during the era of the great cabarets. The book is divided into 8 parts: Bals d'artistes - Les peintres de la Butte - Bals publics. L'Opéra - Le Moulin Rouge - Les étudiants - La rue - Le Bœuf gras - Les lavoirs et la réclame. The book's interest also stems from the large number of black and color illustrations in the text, humorously composed by the author. One of 125 copies on japon, this being one of one hundred numbered from 26 to 125, numbered and signed by the author at the justification. A superb copy bound by Carayon, complete with the double illustrated cover and enriched with the fold-out publication poster, printed on japon and bound at the end.
