CLAUDEL (Paul). - Lot 135
CLAUDEL (Paul). Connaissance de l'Est. Paris: Société du Mercure de France, 1907. - In-12, dark green half-maroquin à la Bradel, smooth spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Ch. Septier). Second enlarged edition, after that of 1900, of these impressions of the Far East by Paul Claudel, who spent several years in China as French consul successively in Shanghai, Fou-Tchéou, Peking and Tien-Tsin. The work is made up of independent essays, sometimes describing a pagoda, a mountain, etc., sometimes a local festival, an atmosphere in a garden, all of which enable the author to introduce the reader to the Chinese soul and, more generally, to that of man and his destiny. One of 12 numbered copies on Hollande paper, enriched at the head with a visiting card from Mr. and Mrs. Paul Claudel. A very fine copy.
