Jean-Jacques ROUSSEAU (1712-1778). L.A.S., Môtiers February - Lot 139
Jean-Jacques ROUSSEAU (1712-1778). L.A.S., Môtiers February 26, 1764, to Nicolas Duchesne; 2pages in-4. Interesting letter to his bookseller friend about his works. It is "not necessary to bother Made la Mareschale de Luxembourg again about the fifty louis. These great ladies have other matters to attend to than ours, all things considered; this trifle may have slipped her mind; but she will surely remember it one day or another. She may also have given the commission to someone who was not punctual in carrying it out. [...] What is certain is that I have received neither money nor notice". Nor has he received the package sent by Duchesne containing copies of the Imitation théâtrale. Then he talks about the five volumes of his Œuvres edited by Duchesne: "I have no presents to make of your edition, which I neither must nor want to recognize as my own. If you allow me, however, to dispose of two or three copies, I shall be able to do so hereafter; but there is no hurry. I would also have been very happy to have a complete copy, and you know that what you sent me lacks the titles, the prints, the preface and the entire fifth volume. You will oblige me greatly if I can make an arrangement for your future shipments that will make them acceptable to me; but for the time being it is appropriate to suspend them. If you wish, I will make an estimate of the previous ones and I will make a gift of them on your behalf to Mlle Le Vasseur [Rousseau's companion]; but she will have to wait; the arrangements on which I was counting having failed. [...] The interest you take in my condition leads me to tell you that I have been feeling slack for the last six weeks; I had even started going out again during the fine days we had; but the return of snow and frost has shut me in again. I'm obliged to split wood to sweat twice a day; of all the remedies I've tried in my life, this is the only one that has given me the slightest relief".
