Pierre LOUŸS. 6 L.A.S. "Pierre" or "P", October-November 190 - Lot 142
Pierre LOUŸS. 6 L.A.S. "Pierre" or "P", October-November 1904, to his wife Louise in Biarritz; 15pages in-12, envelopes and addresses. Tender and amusing letters to his absent wife. - Saturday evening [October 15]. Meeting with Gabriel Hanotaux, "who seemed delighted to see me attack the bull in his place. It seems that following his report [on spelling reform] he was covered in insults by the academics, and he's not angry about ceding the turn to someone else". News of Giboulée the cat, who is "getting a little fatter, but still very nice. Now, to ask for the kitchen door to be opened, she climbs on a file, puts her paw on the lock, and meows. It's almost French"... - [18 ? October]. "Nothing new, except that I have received from Champagne heaps of new family papers which are of great interest to my archival soul and with which I am making up often very funny stories. I'll tell you about it. There's a certain marriage record from 1704 that would be enough in itself to make a short story. I had a rather foolish little grandmother"... - Sunday October 23rd. After the publication in Le Journal of his "Lettre à M. Chaumié sur la réforme de l'orthographe", which he was unable to correct: "I think I'm wrong to do journalism; it adds almost nothing to our budget, and each article gives me ten times more trouble than it's worth. [...] I hate to think that for a typo that is impossible to correct, the public will have found it silly, the people I attack will have rolled over laughing, and those I support will be very unhappy to see their opinion compromised by a 'laughing matter'"... He asks Louise to send him photos of her. - Monday [October 24]. Arrival of a little cat: "He's still very shy. When we put him on a table, he sticks his muzzle between his two paws as if he wanted to get into the carpet. I asked him his name, but he didn't answer. I asked him what sex he was, and he seemed very offended. But he looks like a good cat"... - Thursday [November 3]. Little Pouf is well; news from Paz and Georges who "works a lot and doesn't have much time left for his tidying up. Lebey and Voisins have just spent three hours here. Tomorrow I expect a visit from Schwob, who is due to inspect my library"... - November 5. Account of the incident in the Chamber where Syveton slapped General André. "Quantities of articles on spelling have appeared in the last eight days, all hostile to the project, in Paris and in the provinces. In Chaumont alone, two newspapers have written columns about mine. So far, I haven't had a single contradiction. I congratulate myself on having attached the bell"... Attached is another L.A.S. to Louise, Jeudi [September 27, 1906], recounting the wedding of her doctor Louis Landouzy (2p. in-8, mourning); plus a l.a.s. "Loulouse" from Louise to Pierre, Biarritz November 10, 1905.
