Bracelet in 18K (750) gold and silver, articulated with 3 mo - Lot 85
Bracelet in 18K (750) gold and silver, articulated with 3 motifs each composed of a cameo on agate, the central one depicting several Antique-dressed figures, fantastical creatures, standing in front of a city, the one on the right adorned with a simplified representation of the central cameo, while the one on the left is sculpted with figures in Antique costume; Each cameo is set in a mount highlighted with enamel leaves set with old-cut diamonds and rubies, or rubies and turquoise cabochons; decorated with bars set with onyx cabochons or citrines. The bracelet dates from the first half of the 19th century, and the cameos probably from the 17th century. Preserved in a midnight-blue morocco case engraved with petit fers, the lid bearing the numeral G.R. surmounted by a marquis's crown. Length: approx. 17.5cm. Dimensions of central cameo: approx. 3.5x2.5cm. Gross weight: 82.7g (missing, damaged, bumps) An early 19th century cameos bracelet The bracelet bears 3 cameos, the main one in the center recounting one of the episodes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The main protagonists of this scene are the Titanid Leto, collapsed in an imploring position, her children Apollo and Artemis, an indifferent peasant holding a brandy stick, half-man, half-frog creatures gathering wicker, and in the upper left corner, perhaps the goddess Hera. The scene takes place in front of a city, almost certainly Delos. Leto was one of Zeus' mistresses. When she was pregnant with the divine twins, she was pursued by the jealous Hera, who forbade her to give birth to her children anywhere on earth. Leto wandered endlessly until the city of Delos in Lycia agreed to take her in. There, she begat Artemis and Apollo. On the cameo, we see Leto imploring a peasant to give her access to water to quench her thirst. The peasant refuses his entreaty, and Ovid tells us that he and the other peasants "with their feet and hands disturbed the water of the pond, from the bottom of which, by trampling it wickedly, they made the soft silt rise to the surface here and there". Léto angrily raises her hands to the sky and cries out, "May you live forever in your pond". The titanid's wish was granted, and the men turned into frogs.
