Stéphane MALLARMÉ. - Lot 78
Stéphane MALLARMÉ. L.A.S. "SM", Valvins Lundi [November 2, 1896], to Julie MANET and Paule and Jeannie GOBILLARD; 2pages in-12 on card. Mallarmé here replies collectively to three letters addressed to him by the three girls on November 1, after a stay in Valvins. Julie Manet (daughter of Berthe Morisot, who lived with her cousins Paule and Jeannie, the future Mme Paul Valéry, at 40 rue de Villejust) had enclosed some photographs with her letter. "All these letters, each with its own handwriting that resembles the author's, it's nice: Jeannie's, for example, all Mauclair. Another charming thing about letters is that they arrive in Valvins and don't leave; we keep them. The fact that Geneviève is resuming her correspondence is a good sign. With inequalities, my wife is certainly better; but strength, so slow to return! Otherwise, staying in Valvins is enough, it's not cold at all: and, as our friend Drumont says, it's a different kind of summer now, that's all. He discreetly places the young girls on the other bank, their voices and toilettes gone. (Thanks to Madame Pontillon [sister of Berthe Morisot]). Thanks to Julie and Paule for saying: Cher Monsieur. The photographs of the mother and the little girl, quite lovely. I'm going to take Natanson the crew [of Mallarmé's boat], very funny: ah! that's how we look to you. Hello, all. Your old and triple friend SM". [On the photographs, see previous issue]. Provenance: Valéry collection. Carl Paul Barbier, Documents Stéphane Mallarmé IV (1973), p.467-469. - Correspondance (Austin), t.VIII, p.258-259. - Correspondence (Marchal), no. 2739.
