STENFORT (Pierre Félix) Les Plus belles plantes de la mer, P - Lot 218
STENFORT (Pierre Félix) Les Plus belles plantes de la mer, Paris: chez l'auteur et tous les libraires, 1874. - In-8, red percaline, framed in cold on the covers, author and title gilded on the first cover, smooth spine decorated (publisher's binding). 500 copies of this rare first edition of this alguier, produced following a mission of exploration on the coasts of the Ocean and the English Channel, entrusted to F. Stenfort by the Minister of Public Instruction in 1873. The work consists of a textual section dealing successively with the treatment and application of algae, the search for and harvesting of algae, general information on algae, an introduction to the botany of algae, the three classes of algae (fucoids, florids, zoospores), family descriptions, the list of species described with detailed descriptions, etc. Copy containing 53 samples of real algae glued on cardboard, including one bound at the head, where most copies seem to have only 51. Stenfort collected tens of thousands of seaweed samples, enabling him to offer different ones each time in the 500 copies that make up this edition, making each one unique. Copy in its publisher's boards. Covers damaged, spine faded, stains on boards. Provenance: Mademoiselle Mathilde Chauvet, with dedication in Bonet Maury's hand dated April 14, 1907.
