Thangka representing Amitayus, Bodnath workshop, Nepal, 20th - Lot 208
Thangka representing Amitayus, Bodnath workshop, Nepal, 20th century Polychrome painting on canvas mounted on a textile frame. The composition is organized around the main deity, seated in a meditative posture on a lotiform throne, her body in red, adorned with a five-pointed crown and high bun, jewelry and flowing scarves, holding a vase of long life above her two hands placed on her knees in a meditative gesture. The background features multi-level palatial architecture reminiscent of a celestial palace, surmounted by a rainbow and stylized clouds populated by celestial figures. Surrounding the central deity are symmetrically arranged secondary figures, including bodhisattvas, protective deities and seated figures in circular medallions, some with a peaceful appearance, others with a wrathful expression, characterized by varied complexions (white, blue, green or red), ritual attributes and circular halos. The lower part shows a landscape with a lotus pond, pavilions and small groups of figures in a stylized mountain setting. Palette dominated by red, green, blue and gold tones, precise linear design, gold highlights on ornaments and architectural elements. The thangka is surrounded by a polychrome silk frame embroidered with flowers and Buddhist symbols. Two red ribbons run down each side and it is covered with polychrome protective silk. Painting size: 53 x 39 cm A Buddhist tantric mandala, Tibet or Himalayan region, 20th century. Polychrome painting on canvas. The composition is organized around a quadrangular palace inscribed within a circle symbolizing the sacred universe, with a deity seated on a lotus in the center, surrounded by eight radiating compartments housing deities and ritual attributes. The lower register features a stylized landscape flanked by two wrathful protective deities, while the upper part shows two masters or lamas in clouds. Ritual inscription on the back. Painting size: 55 x 40 cm
