Jean DUBUFFET (1901-1985). 9 L.A.S., 1973-1981, to Marc Dachy; 10pages in-4. Important correspondence to Marc Dachy (1952-2015), art historian, specialist in the Dada movement, founder of the avant-garde magazine Luna Park. December 7, 1973. Dubuffet thanks Dachy for his "warm comments on my Coucou Bazar [...] The production of the show as it was presented in Paris was not exactly what I had hoped for. But it undoubtedly allowed me to imagine what could be done. I'm now planning to undertake a new version of the show, this time more in line with my views. This involves some awkward practical problems, which I hope to resolve"... The correspondence resumed seven years later, in 1980, when Dachy sent Dubuffet issues of Luna-Park, which he considered excellent, including one devoted to Sophie Podolski (1953-1974): "Amazing. Scary too. I wonder if the author is really a woman or just a man. [...] A wonderful book, very effective (text and drawings so integrated) [...] All very surprising. Gives a lot to think about. It's a pity I'm ill at the moment. But it brings me comfort". He recalls René de Solier: "I've never been able to figure out where his place was". Then he talks about his lawsuit against the Régie Renault, after the destruction of his Salon d'été, which he won in cassation: "The preposterous argument that the destroyed monument did not have the quality of a work of art (but was nothing more than the enlargement of a work of art) has been refuted by the Cassation and can therefore no longer be taken up again"... (February 5). - His work suffers as a result of his health problems: "I'm in a bad way at the moment, waiting for an operation. My work has been interrupted. The portrait, all these last months, on drawings and paintings in connection with the Theaters of memory of which the reproductions (in the good sense or upside down) of the review Clefs [...] gave you some idea. But other various works had taken place before these following the Hourloupe cycle"... (February 26). - He comes back to Sophie Podolski: "In all its various forms (texts and drawings), it manifests a very impressive, and specifically feminine, vital fire. The tragic conclusion in 1974 is distressing. We talk about the developments that all this could have brought about in the future"... (June 13). - He thanks Dachy "for the strong impression you have made of my 1975 series of paintings. I'm very pleased that you feel so strongly about them. I mean, that they touch you in this way. They were rarely shown, at least in Europe: at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs exhibition in 1976, which featured a large number of them - far too many, my dealers thought), then in Turin, at the exhibition organized by Fiat in 1978"... (July 16). February 21, 1981. "You're very kind to take an interest in these little writings, which now seem to me to have been very light-hearted. I'd put it differently today. Or rather, I think, I would refrain from formulating them. The language of painting, for communication, is a more effective vehicle than that of words"... - April 25, thanking the Luna-Park dedicated to Christian Dotremont: "a full load of hatchlings. The grain is rising! - July 15, after the Versailles Court of Appeal ruling in the Renault case: "It remains to be seen whether the Régie will now appeal to the French Supreme Court. It also remains to be seen what I will decide to do. I don't know yet"...
