[HANUKKAH] - Lot 260
[HANUKKAH] Silver Hanukkah menorah Birmingham (England), 1936. Bears the following inscription: “To Regine from the Council for a Beautiful Israel, Nov. 19, 1984” 35.5 x 32 cm - weight: 501.5 g Complete with its shamash. Hallmarked. The Council for a Beautiful Israel is an organization whose goal is to improve the quality of life in Israel by promoting ecology, environmental protection, and land-use planning. This Hanukkah menorah bears witness to Regine’s attachment to the State of Israel and its people. Régine (1929–2022), to whom this Hanukkah lamp was given, was a woman whose life alone would have been enough to fill several books. Born in Belgium under the name Sylberberg, she was hidden at the start of World War II in a convent, and later—after her father’s arrest—with the Heymann family. At thirteen and a half, she fell in love with the young Claude Heymann, who died in deportation after being arrested by the Milice. After the liberation, she worked in Paris at her father’s café, then, starting in 1952, at the club “Le Whisky à Gogo.” She later went on to open her own nightclubs. Having managed 22 clubs around the world, she was soon nicknamed “the queen of the night.” But she didn’t just manage her many clubs and hotels; she also performed numerous songs composed by Aznavour, Gainsbourg, Dabadie, Serge Lama, and Patrick Modiano, among others. She also appeared in a few films, published her memoirs, and founded and led charitable organizations. Upon her death, President Macron and his wife paid tribute to “a leading figure of Parisian nightlife and French chanson.” Keywords: Judaica, Jewish, Hebrew, rabbis, Torah, Hebrew, Hebraica, Judaism, synagogue, Zionism, Passover, Haggadah, Passover, menorah, Hanukkah, Torah, Juden, Israelite, Israel, antisemitism, Dreyfus, Megillah, Sephardic, ketubah
