Theodor ZWINGER (Basel 1533-1588) Swiss physician, philosoph - Lot 182
Theodor ZWINGER (Basel 1533-1588) Swiss physician, philosopher and humanist. L.A.S. (signed at head) "Zwingerus", Basel Cal. Sept. lxxi [July 1, 1571], to Karel van Utenhove in Dusseldorf; 1 fol. page (33.5 x 21 cm, address on back (tabbed, top edge slightly frayed); in Latin. Very rare humanist letter. Zwinger settled in Basel in 1559, dividing his leisure time between the cultivation of letters and the practice of medicine. He taught Greek language, ethics and theoretical medicine. Author of numerous works, he was the main architect of the monumental encyclopedia, Theatrum vitæ humanæ, the 2nd volume of which appeared in 1571. Karl von Utenhove (Ghent 1536-Cologne 1600), Flemish humanist, philologist and poet, studied in Basel, where he published his first works, while working as a proofreader for a bookseller. In 1570, having married, he moved to Dusseldorf, close to the court of William V, Duke of Juliers-Clèves-Berg, and taught in Cologne, where he died. The letter, from the Erasmushaus bookshop, is listed by Carlos Gilly (no. 2402) in his Zwingerkorrespondenz Verzeichnis der Briefe von und an Theodor Zwinger (1533-1588) (2015); he listed 9 letters from Utenhove to Zwinger (including one dated March 28, 1571, preserved in the Basel University Library [Frey-Gryn.II 26,522]), to which our letter must reply, and only two other letters from Zwinger to Utenhove. "Utenhovio Zwingerus S. Literas tuas superiore mercatu per bibliopotas accepi nostrates, Brando legendas obtuli"... This interesting letter, which appears to be unpublished, deals with the purchase of books: their price in florins or thalers, the publishers, the comparative reliability of texts; the exchange of poems between Zwinger and Untenhove (apparently, it was Zwinger who had encouraged Utenhove to write poetry); Zwinger's teaching as a professor of medicine: "Ego in Hippocrate totus"...
