James-J.-J. Tissot (1836-1902) - Lot 106
James-J.-J. Tissot (1836-1902) Mediunimic appearance. 1885. Manière noire. 345x492mm. Wentworth 76. Superb proof on strong simili-japan, from the 1st state (of 2), before the letter. Heavy foxing, especially at right edge. Full margins. "Tissot practiced black etching between 1883 and 1886, essentially, with real talent and in large format. Interestingly, it was on his return to France that he used this technique, so popular in England, to depict Kathleen Newton, his recently deceased companion. Here, Kathleen emerges from the deep blacks in the company of medium William Eglinton. The work is a translation of a painting Tissot kept all his life." (Exhibition James Tissot (1836-1902), l'ambigu moderne, Paris, Musée d'Orsay, 2020).
