Carved ivory snuffbox in the shape of a reclining woman, Japan, Meiji period (1868–1912) – Taisho period (1912–1926) Her face faces the viewer, and her cheek rests against the palm of her right hand, whose arm is bent and rests on the ground. Her left leg is extended, while her right leg, bent, rises perpendicularly toward the hand of her left arm, which is holding her foot. The face is gentle and smiling; her hair is smoothed back and adorned with a small flower. She wears a tunic and pants that were originally red and blue, edged with floral-patterned trimmings bearing traces of gilding. The foot of the left leg is removable and serves as the bottle’s stopper. Traces of polychrome paint and gilding remain. Length: 11.4 cm; weight: 37 g
