Adolphe BLANQUI (1798–1854). Letter from the author (L.A.S.) - Lot 5
Adolphe BLANQUI (1798–1854). Letter from the author (L.A.S.), Paris, June 28, 1825, to Miss Octavia Say, in Bayswater, near London; 3 pages in-4 on fine paper, address with postmarks (small tear in the postmark that does not affect the text). An interesting letter to the daughter of the economist Jean-Baptiste Say, born in 1804. He learned from Horace that their journey had gone well, and he imagines the pleasures of their stay in England, mocking the “coronation masquerades” [of Charles X] in Paris: “two fireworks displays that killed three people, and food distributions a hundred times more disgusting than usual. Lord Northumberland treated all the government bigwigs […] The court servants were awarded the ribbon of the Legion of Honor,” etc. He also mentions the situation in Greece, where “Miaulis and Kanaris had burned the entire Egyptian fleet of Ibrahim Pasha, a close friend of the Holy Alliance”; and in Spain: “pirates from all over the world are flocking to the great feast of the restored Spanish Monarchy”… He asks for news of Auguste Comte and his course, the outline of which is “entirely new and philosophical”… He asks for information about a business school that has just opened in London… He shares news about various friends… He has placed the portrait of his sister by Miss Say in his study, “where it is now absolutely impossible for me to live without thinking of you”…
