Francis HORNER (1778–1817). Letter from Woburn Abbey, Wednes - Lot 43
Francis HORNER (1778–1817). Letter from Woburn Abbey, Wednesday [1815], to Sir Samuel Romilly; 1½ pages, in-8; in English. Regarding the trial of Elizabeth Fenning [a servant convicted of attempting to poison her employers; she was sentenced and executed on July 26, 1815; her highly controversial trial caused a great stir]. He agrees with Romilly’s opinion and, in the absence of witnesses, would like the trial postponed and further investigations conducted: “How could the chancellor allow her to be executed if there was no other witness? If this is an accurate account of the trial, the case seems to cry out for some investigation or further proceedings”… Enclosed is a note addressed to attorney James Reddie in Edinburgh.
