[GARNERAY (Jean-François)].
Collection des nouveaux costumes des autorités constituées, civils et militaires: costumes des législateurs et autres fonctionnaires publics.
[Paris : Imprimerie de Boiste, 1796]. - In-4, 300 x 230 : 26 plates. Marbled and glazed calf, wide frame of gilt roulettes and fillets on the boards, quatrefoils with gilt riddled background in the corners, ornate smooth spine, inner gilt roulette, untrimmed, case (P. Claessens fils).
Colas, no. 1181. - Glasser, pp. 153-154. - Roux, Inventaire du fonds français, engravers du dix-huitième siècle, BNF, I, pp. 102-104.
First edition of these 26 plates engraved in the black manner by Alix after Garneray and colored. They depict the official attire of the Directoire: members of the Directoire exécutif in full regalia, ministers, messengers of state, judges, colonial agents, presidents of municipal administrations, generals-in-chief, commissaires ordonnateurs des guerres, and more.
The first ten plates appeared in January 1796, followed by 16 more, including military costumes, in May of the same year. This interesting suite is close to that of Grasset de Saint-Sauveur, drawn around the same period. The costumes of the "constituted authorities" had been fixed by the decree of 3 brumaire an IV (October 25, 1795).
The two description leaves are missing. The order of the plates does not follow that given in the bibliographies.
Some scattered foxing, small paper losses restored in the margins of a few plates.
Provenance :
M. Van Nieuwenhuyse, with bookplate. - Unidentified bookplate.
