Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963) - Lot 39
Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963)
3 L.A.S., September-October 1957; 2pages in-8, and 1 page in-4 (the 1st on Santo-Sospir letterhead),
2 envelopes.
September 29. "Don't worry, it's Gérard Worms who counts and he'll do what I want. Your photographs have nothing to do with documentation on Gypsies. I'll take care of that. The book will be magnificent"...
October 9th. "I saw Worms and he's giving me the photographs to choose from. I suggest you frame the faces in the ones that risk censorship. [...] Can you add the album with the dead birds or dogs - which I'll link to the rest by writing. It seems to me that this is the solution that would avoid monotony. I didn't know about the statue of the Saints, which is admirable. In short, it's not a question of increasing you, but of honoring you more. So send me as soon as possible a selection of dramatic photos of animals and landscapes. I'll arrange to have them as curtain raisers and apotheosis"...
Milly October 20. "This Sunday I took a good look at the Gypsies. You have to put everything on (except the doubles) and as far as inappropriate jokes are concerned, you have to frame the faces under the fly"...
We enclose 2 telegrams from Cocteau (Sept. 10 and Oct. 17); and 7 letters from Lucien CLERGUE to Cocteau (double carbon), September-October 1957.
CCC p. 37-39.
