Johann Barthold JONGKIND. L.A.S., La Côte Saint-André Novemb - Lot 338
Johann Barthold JONGKIND. L.A.S., La Côte Saint-André November 9, 1880, to his friend the coal merchant Rochette; 8pages in-8 (folds tired, small repairs to tape). Long letter. He has not come to Nevers, and is thinking of spending the winter at La Côte Saint-André with Mme Fesser near the children: "we fear the Paris winter"; in his apartment on rue de Chevreuse, "when the snow and bad weather fall in the streets", it's not pleasant "to be obliged to go out daily for provisions and to climb back up to his 3rd floor, while here we occupy ourselves with nothing but rest and our correspondence and our reading"... His arm is better, "but I still have a sore stomach and great inflamation so for the moment I still have to keep my room". He has been with Mme Fesser in Narbonne, and they visited "Perpignan, Port Vendre, the new Cette, Nîmes, Arles, Marseille, Toulon, and then La Ciotat"... He mentions relatives and acquaintances, Mme Rochette who no longer has "the embarrassment of the Café"... He reports that "Jules his wife and his 3 little dear children are all well, since we've been here they're growing up and starting to talk and are always close to me and grandma with that we're well housed". As for the grape harvest, "it's done here in pretty good condition - saves sick vines - the ectoliter 55 francs"... Etc.
